Do not use the Windows Vista Media Center plug in thing that comes with the X360 (Media Connect I think it's called). That has no support for divx or xvid files. Plus, I found it laggy and although it's "prettier" than the below solution, the advantages end there. Instead, install your own uPNP server, which DO support divx and xvid:

TVersity or TwonkyMedia Server (not free) are your best bets. Install the VLC Media Player on your computer first and that'll put in all the codecs you need. You shouldn't have to do any messing around with the registry. Dunno what Transcode and Encode 360 are - but they're not necessary. The X360 dashboard will decode Divx and XVid natively now without having to install anything special on the computer (assuming you have the dashboard update that was pushed out about 9 months ago).

Temporarily disable your Windows firewall while you're messing around with the X360 and uPNP servers (which is what TVersity and Twonky are). This will assist you in figuring out if the problem is network related, codec related, or uPNP server related.

There were a lot, a LOT of iterations of Encode360. From initial script to the first beta was about 2 weeks back in November 2006, with most of the development taking place over the next 6 or so weeks as I really got stuck into how Windows Media Encoder worked and the automation objects. I had very little knowledge of video encoding prior to then, and to be honest, I’m still utterly baffled by most of it :)

All in all, I have yet to find an application that will convert your video as easily and with the quality of Encode360. Quality of course is always tied to your source file but, much like other things in life, you’ll get out of it what you put into it.

I originally had a chipped X-Box with XBMC. After upgrading to a 360, I was in a bit of a bind as regards watching pretty much anything that wasn’t WMV. I found Transcode360 which did a great job at the time, although there were some issues around streaming and in general, quality. Then when I upgraded my home machine to Vista, Transcode360 didn’t work!
