Does this require that the PlayOn server be running on the Windows Media Center itself, or can it be running on a Windows Home Server machine?

That could best be answered by the vmcPlayIt developer. To the best of my knowledge it has to be on the PC you're running it on.

vmcPlayIt has a lot of promise, but still isnt stable enough for anyone using it seriously. By seriously, I mean it needs to be wife proof. I had it crash several times, including media center saying "can't launch vmcPlayIt", and it even crashed the playon service which doesn't happen from Xbox360 or PS3 players.

To be clear, the program itself is AMAZING, and it DOES have an INCREDIBLE interface, which is why it was so dissapointing not to be able to use it. I've tried both on Win7 7100 clean install and Vista 32bit media centers, and both exhibit the same issues.
